With a significant winter storm forecasted to reach Bethlehem this Saturday evening, January 24, 2026, Lehigh University is actively preparing to ensure our campus remains safe, warm and operational. We are monitoring the forecast closely and our teams - from dining to safety - are ready to support you through the duration of the storm.

While we anticipate mixed precipitation and the potential for sub-freezing temperatures to persist into early next week, our goal is to maintain our daily routine as much as possible while prioritizing the safety of every student, faculty and staff member.

To stay informed as conditions evolve, please watch for HawkWatch alerts and bookmark the Weather Update webpage for real-time updates.

What to Expect and How to Prepare

University Schedule
A decision regarding Monday’s class and work schedule will be shared on Sunday. If leaving campus, consider taking any materials needed to work or learn remotely should it become necessary.

Dining
Preparations are underway to provide dining options to campus throughout the duration of the storm. If there are any closures, delayed openings, or service adjustments to campus dining locations, the most up-to-date information will be shared on dining services social media. We encourage you to check frequently for the latest updates:

Transportation and Parking

  • Transportation: Bus routes will operate according to regular schedules for as long as possible. Interruptions or changes in schedules will be communicated as they occur.
  • Parking: Please park in your designated areas. After the storm, we appreciate your cooperation in moving vehicles promptly to allow our plowing crews to clear lots safely. For those living off campus, it is expected that snow emergency routes may be implemented. Please stay aware and follow the direction of local authorities.

Possible Power Outages
While significant ice is not currently in the forecast, winter storms can occasionally cause power disruptions. Should an outage occur, the university and local community may experience the same challenges. We encourage students living on and off campus to prepare to stay warm, including having on hand extra blankets, warm clothes, and taking steps to conserve heat in your house or room. Remember to keep your electronic devices fully charged.

Safety Steps to Consider
Before the snow begins, we encourage you to consider a few proactive steps:

  • Carry your essentials: Keep your keys and Lehigh ID with you at all times. Lockout response times will be longer than normal during severe weather.
  • Secure your space: Close windows and doors tightly to conserve heat; un-plug non-essential electronics and ensure your primary devices are fully charged. For those with labs, review the Winter Storm Lab checklist for additional tips.
  • Commute with Care: Expect hazardous road conditions and avoid unnecessary travel. If you must head out, wear layers and shoes with strong traction. Plan extra travel time and follow the direction of local authorities.
  • Take care of one another: Alert LUPD if someone is in need of assistance. Remember the cold weather can intensify the effects of alcohol.
  • Pet Care: Limit your pet’s time outside and ensure you have a few days of food and any necessary medications on hand for them.
  • Gather supplies: Consider gathering the following items ahead of the storm:
    • 3-5 day supply of essential medicines
    • Basic first aid items
    • Flashlight and a charged power bank
    • Water and non-perishable snacks
    • Extra blankets and warm layers

Lehigh University Police and Campus Safety
