A sunny retirement
Meyerhoff currently owns 18 horses, but only one, Sunny Sunrise, resides at his Hawksworth Farm. |
Sunny Sunrise is the only racehorse living at the same address as racehorse owner Harry Meyerhoff because, as Meyerhoff and his wife Mary Jo both say, there is something special about Sunny.
As a race horse owner, you can put your horses for sale at a certain price and if someone wants one, they can take it. Meyerhoff lost numerous horses this way over the years, but the ones that held a special place in his heart, like Spectacular Bid and Sunny Sunrise, were never put up for sale.
“Sunny Sunrise earned over $1.3 million and raced for nine years all over the country—Chicago, New York, and Florida just to name a few,” says Mary Jo, who enjoys trail riding on Sunny Sunrise around their property. “So when Sunny retired I said to Harry, ‘You have to let me have him—even if he is just a lawn ornament,’” she says.
