In the News: Professor 'crowdsources' teaching philosophy

Faculty members usually hold their teaching philosophies close to the vest. Jeremy Littau, assistant professor of journalism and communication, recently broke tradition by asking his current and former students to weigh in, via Twitter, on his philosophy. His efforts were featured in The Chronicle of Higher Education.
Littau wondered whether students’ perceptions matched his own and found, for the most part, they did. Interestingly, Littau’s use of social media to query students demonstrated one aspect of his teaching philosophy: his use of innovation in the classroom.
Littau teaches courses in multimedia reporting, new media and social change. He recently received a national award from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication for his Ph.D. thesis on online communities.
