New Varsity House nears completion

Construction of the new A. Haigh Cundey Varsity House is nearing completion and the modern facility is scheduled to open by the end of the summer. The renovation project, which was defined as a priority in the 1997-98 NCAA Certification Study, includes locker room space for women’s lacrosse, field hockey, softball, track and field and cross country, and renovated space for football, men’s lacrosse and baseball. Facility enhancements also include expanded sports medicine space, team meeting rooms and reception space, expanded space for the equipment operation and a modern 5,000 square foot strength training center that will be available to varsity athletes.
The building will be called the A. Haigh Cundey Varsity House in honor of the leading donor for the project, Haigh Cundey ’55, who recognized the vital recruitment role a facility like this would play in attracting the best and brightest students to Lehigh. Other contributors include Paul Leitner ’76, who made the first substantial commitment and for whom the Strength Training Center will be named. The final critical commitments came from visionary trustees Jim Tanenbaum ’70, recently elected chair of the Lehigh Board of Trustees, and former board chair Ron Ulrich`66.
