Monday, Oct. 19: Fight the Power: The Music That Changed America

This multimedia show celebrates free expression and music and is part of Lehigh Celebrates the First, a series of First Amendment-related campus activities funded by a grant from the Liberty Tree Initiative. The show features musicians telling the story of free speech and music in America with a soundtrack of classic rock, country, folk, soul and hip-hop songs. Produced by the First Amendment Center, it is part of the Freedom Sings concert series, which has toured America since 2000.

The event begins at 7 p.m. in Whitaker Auditorium.

Tuesday, Oct. 20: Perreo and Power: Reggaeton’s Speaking Bodies and Sexuality

Raquel Z. Rivera, an author and singer-songwriter, will present a lecture titled Perreo and Power: Reggaeton’s Speaking Bodies and Sexuality. Rivera is a researcher at the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College of the City University of New York.

The event begins at 4 p.m. in Room 200 of Linderman Library. It is sponsored by the Humanities Center with the American Studies Program, the Globalization and Social Change Initiative, the Joint Multicultural Program, the Latin American Studies Program, and the Department of Sociology and Anthropology.

Tuesday, Oct. 20: Deficits, Deadlock and Deadbeats

John L. Hilley, executive-in-residence with the Martindale Center for the Study of Private Enterprise, will give an address titled Deficits, Deadlock and Deadbeats: The Politics of Dysfunction. Hilley was senior adviser and director of legislative affairs for former President Bill Clinton and is a former executive vice president for strategic development with the Nasdaq Stock Market.

The event begins at 4:10 in Room 91 of the Rauch Business Center. It is sponsored by the Martindale Center with the College of Business and Economics.

Tuesday, Oct. 20: Current Climate Legislation

Stephen Buryk ’10, a double major in economics and international relations, will discuss recent international legislation regarding climate change. The event begins at 5 p.m. in Room 466 of Packard Lab and is part of Lehigh Green Week.

Tuesday, Oct. 20: Corporate Governance in the Delaware Court System

Don Parsons, vice chancellor of the Court of Chancery of the State of Delaware, will give an address titled Corporate Governance in the Delaware Court System. The lecture is part of the a year-long celebration as the College of Business and Economics recognizes 100 years of business education at Lehigh.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. in Perella Auditorium in the Rauch Business Center.

Wednesday, Oct. 21: The Mystery of Stained Glass at Lehigh University

Lance Kasparian, an architect and historian in Salem, Mass., is an expert on the work of the 19th-century craftsman William McPherson, who created the stained glass windows of the original Packer Memorial Church, which have been replaced, and possibly the Linderman Library skylight as well. In his study of McPherson, Kasparian has utilized the portfolio held in the Lehigh libraries’ special collections.

The event begins at 4 p.m. in Room 200 of Linderman Library. It is sponsored by Friends of the Lehigh Libraries.

Wednesday, Oct. 21: Being Latino in America —Film

A CNN program hosted by Soledad O’Brien explores the impact of the U.S. Latino population on American culture. Viewing begins at 9 p.m. in the Multicultural Room in the U.C. The event is part of the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month being sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

Thursday, Oct. 22: Being Latino in America—Roundtable and Film

A roundtable discussion on the impact of America’s Latino population on America’s culture begins at 8 p.m. in the U.C.’s Multicultural Room and will be followed at 9 p.m. by a showing of the CNN program Being Latino in America. The event is sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs and is part of the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Thursday, Oct. 22: Acceleration of protons with ultra-intense lasers: Applications in cancer therapy.

Iavor Veltchev, a former postdoctoral research scientist at Lehigh and now an assistant professor at the Radiation Physics Department of the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, will discuss the development of a novel type of particle accelerator for protons using ultra-intense laser pulses.

The event begins at 4:10 p.m. in Room 316 of Whitaker and is part of the Colloquium Series of the department of physics.

Thursday-Saturday, Oct. 22-24: Fritz Lab Centennial: Celebrating a Legacy of Engineering Innovation

Synposiums, tours, a gala reception and a hands-on design session celebrate the legacy of John Fritz, Lehigh trustee, whose endowment 100 years ago made possible the establishment of the world-renowned Fritz Laboratory in Lehigh’s civil engineering department. Information on dates and times of events can be found here. The celebration is sponsored by the department of civil and environmental engineering.
