In the News: Henri Barkey on the rise of Turkey

Henri Barkey, professor of international relations and a leading expert on Turkey, is much in demand by national and international media outlets as the nation’s profile rises on the global stage.

Barkey’s most recent interviews have focused on Turkey’s status as one of America’s regional allies amidst the uncertainty of the Arab Spring and also on the escalating tensions between Turkey and Israel.

“Turkish-Israeli relations are in a low point, the lowest point they have been in a very, very long time,” Barkey said Sept. 22 on PBS NewsHour. “What I worry is that they actually can go even lower. And that is the big danger at the moment.”

Barkey, the Bernard L. and Bertha F. Cohen Professor, is a former member of the U.S. State Department Policy Planning Staff and has taught at Princeton, Columbia, the State University of New York, and the University of Pennsylvania.
