Re:H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu): Update from Lehigh University’s Pandemic Committee
This message contains important information for all members of the Lehigh community regarding swine influenza A (H1N1) and steps that the university is taking to prepare for the possibility of the swine flu affecting our community.
As you are likely aware, international, federal and state officials are preparing to deal with a possible swine flu outbreak. Lehigh University’s Pandemic Committee developed the Lehigh University Pandemic Emergency Response Plan to assist the Lehigh community during a pandemic event. The committee is meeting regularly to monitor the current situation and to ensure the health of our campus community.
As of 3:30 p.m. today, there have been no reported cases in Pennsylvania. Lehigh University is working in concert with all local, state and federal agencies to prepare for the possible detection of the virus here.
At this point, there are no changes to any campus or health system activities, exam schedules, work schedules, commencement exercises, athletic events, or alumni reunion events. At this time, all study abroad programs will run as planned. We will, of course, continue to monitor the situation and update you if necessary.
For the time being, faculty, staff and students are encouraged to practice the same level of hygiene that is recommended every year during flu season:
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and throw the tissue in the trash after use.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as germs are spread this way.
• Try to avoid close contact with people who appear to be ill.
• It is essential at a time like this to regularly wash your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand cleaner.
• If you experience flu-like symptoms, students should contact the Lehigh University Health and Wellness Center at 610-758-3870. Staff and faculty members should contact their family physician.
We will keep you advised of important updates as they become available via the Lehigh University Web site, e-mails and relevant postings.
