Black & White Sketches in Quarantine is an online exhibition that highlights a virtual artist community and project of the same name. Jordanian visual artist Hilda Hiary organized the project not long after the government of Jordan imposed a nationwide lockdown to fight the spread of COVID-19.

She began to connect artists through a Facebook group, and they shared pen-and-pencil sketches created in response to the quarantine.

Though the project began with a close circle of Hiary’s friends, it has grown to encompass more than 4,000 artists from around the world. In an interview with Mark Wonsidler, curator of exhibitions and collections at Lehigh University Art Galleries, Hiary says she was surprised that so many established artists had fallen in love with the idea of going back to pencil and paper.
