Dear members of the Lehigh community:
As we approach the conclusion of the semester and the academic year, I hope that all members of our community are doing well, and that our seniors and graduating students are savoring the final weeks of their college experience.
As you likely have seen in the media, significant disruptions are occurring on university campuses across the country. The disruptions have caused concern among students, faculty and staff, distressed members of those campus communities, and impeded students pursuing their academic goals.
Members of the Lehigh community should be proud that the demonstrations and other events on our campus have been largely respectful and have allowed the expression of a range of concerns and perspectives. They have also not disrupted our educational environment. This is an example of the goal of the respectful free expression that is a pillar of higher education and is vital to Lehigh’s vibrant campus environment. The right to such expression has been balanced with our unequivocal commitment to providing a safe, welcoming atmosphere for all members of our community that supports our educational mission.
Some demonstrations on campuses nationwide have included occupying, restricting, or limiting access to buildings, and erecting outdoor encampments on university spaces. Such acts are not permitted on our campus. They disrupt the operations of the university, hinder students’ academic pursuits, and jeopardize the safety of those in both our Lehigh and local communities. They also create unease and fear among members of the campus communities. Lehigh University policies such as the Policy on Thought, Inquiry and Expression, and Dissent by Students and the student code of conduct are in place to facilitate respectful expression and dialogue in a safe environment.
I ask all members of our community to continue to uphold university standards and express themselves in a way that is compassionate and respectful to all, particularly those in our Jewish and Palestinian communities who may be hurting.
During this time of global unrest, we continue to provide a variety of resources, including maintaining open lines of communication with student leaders from a wide range of organizations, and individual support for those in need. Resources are available for students, faculty and staff who may be experiencing distress during this uncertain time.
Safeguarding the well-being of our community is our top priority and our commitment to fostering an inclusive, welcoming community for all remains unwavering. We are dedicated to supporting an environment where constructive dialogue and diverse perspectives flourish—and all are respected and valued.
